A CLASS DIVIDED

Dear students,
This week we are going to deal with the idea of prejudice, discrimination and racism. For that purpose we are going to do some research, watch some videos and then discuss about the topic.

The videos we are going to watch deal with black discrimination in the United States in 1970s. Therefore, the first we'll have to do will be to do some research about that time and that place.
Before watching the videos
We are going to make three teams. The first two rows on the left will be team 1, the last two rows on the left will be team 2 and all the rows on the left will be team 3.

TASKS FOR TEAM NUMBER 1 (Martin Luther King).
Look on the Internet (in English) for information about Martin Luther King and find the answers to these five questions:
1.- Who was Martin Luther King and why did he become famous?

2.- What is "I have a dream"?

3.- What achievement did MLK achieve in 1964?

4.- When and how did MLK die?

5.- What is Martin Luther King Day?

TASKS FOR TEAM NUMBER 2 (Civil Rights Movement).

1.- What was the Civil Rights Movement in US in the 1960s-70s?

2.- What were their demands?

3.- Who were their leaders?

4.- What was their way to protest?

5.- When did this movement end?

TASKS FOR TEAM NUMBER 3 (Census Report)

1.- What was the percentage of immigrants in the US in 1970?

2.- What is the percentage of immigrants at the moment? How many people are that?

3.- What was the percentage of immigrants in Spain in 1980?

4.- What is the percentage of immigrants at the moment? How many people are that?

5.- What 3 nationalities compose the most important part of immigrants in the US and in Spain? Are they the same?

APLE HOMEWORK (Deadline Friday January 28th)

Hello students,

Your homework this week has two parts.
- The first is quite easy to understand. You have to do 2400 extra points in English Central. I have created a channel with the videos I recommend, but you can watch the ones you prefer.
- The second part has to do with the book. You have to do activities 2, 4 and 5 from page 24 (Sección D Listening - Finding out more about a product).

You must take the book to class on Monday so that I can mark it.

Enjoy your weekend.

3 ESO LESSON JANUARY 20TH

15 minutes: Go to "Going Places". There should be an icon on your desktop. Choose Module 3 and do:

-Vocabulary 2 (Health)
-Grammar 1 & 2 (passive)

35 minutes: This term you are going to create a glog. You are going to get familiar with the tool today, but then you will have to finish it at home. The deadline to have a first draft of your glog is Monday 31st. The first thing you have to do is go to this site:

Here, at the bottom of the page, you can see some examples of Glogs. Have a look at some of them by clicking on the image.

The first you will have to do is log in with this information:

Then, you must edit your profile and write at least your real name.
Now it is the time to change the password to a one you will always remember (write it down somewhere in your diary if you think you might forget).

If you didn't do it at Christmas, it is the time to go to the "What is Glogster EDU" Section that you will find at the top of the page. Once you have finished and understand everything, there comes the final stage, "to create a glog". This option is in pink at the top right hand corner of the screen.

Now it comes the time to play with your new glog adding a wall, text, sound, images or even video. Just see how it works.
If you have any problems, just raise your hand and I will try to help you.

Good luck.

APLE COMPUTER LESSON JANUARY 17TH

Dear Students,

30 minutes: Last night, the ceremony of the Golden Globe Awards was held. I don't know if you know the results already or if it is something that interests you. There are loads of different categories, but I thought we could talk a little bit about the Best Film - Drama category.

You are going to watch a trailer of each of the five nominees on the overhead projector, which are

- Black swan.
- The fighter
- Inception
- The king's speech.
- The social network.

After you watch the trailers, we will have a short debate about which film you think is better and should win the Golden Globe and why. If you have seen any of the 5 candidates, it would be interesting to know your opinion about it.

20 minutes: If you didn't do the phonetics part last week. It is time to do it now. Check on the entry from last week and do it.
If you had time to do it or just did it at home later, go to this page and do these listenings. Hamburger Restaurants (easy), Haven't we met before (medium) and Housing complaints (difficult). Once you have finished, write a comment in this entry telling me your results. Don't forget to say who you are (in the case of Alvaros and Lauras, last name as well, please).

Have fun

APLE LESSON JANUARY 13-14TH

Welcome back, students,

Happy New Year to you all. This year we come back with new ideas and sites to improve your oral English.

20 minutes: Maybe the most important one is English Central. Since you already registered during Christmas, it is time to start practising. You have to watch and do 3 videos (one easy, one medium and one difficult). Then, the rest will be for homework in the case of my students (not Joann's).

15 minutes: We are also going to continue practising our phonetics. For that purpose, you have to click here and do all the activities related to /u/ and /u:/.

15 minutes: Finally, we are going to watch a video about Ted Williams and answer some questions about it. If the video doesn't work in there, I will play it on the overhead projector, just let me know.
When you finished answering que questions, scroll down and fill in the grids with your full name, my teacher code "jarroyo" and the class ID: "none". That way, I will be able to see your results.
Here is the video and the questions:

3º ESO GLOGSTER

Hello, students,

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you have enjoyed your holidays, but also had time to do all your homework.
This term we are going to work with glogster and glogs. I have already told you something about it in the class, but here you have a link where you can get a lot of information about it. Next week we'll go to the computer room to work with it, but if you don't want to waste the whole lesson, it is important that you know something about it in advance.
If you have any problems understanding how it works, you can write a comment here or send me an email to javiprofeingles@hotmail.com . Don't forget to say who you are.

Good luck.
Javier
